One of the most fascinating discoveries we’ve made as paranormal investigators is that unexplained activity isn’t limited to famous haunted locations or places marked by tragedy. Some of the most compelling experiences we’ve encountered have taken place in ordinary family homes, where investigations of paranormal activity can be just as remarkable—if not more so—than those at well-known haunted sites.
Over the years, we’ve investigated several private residences where homeowners have experienced unexplained voices, footsteps, unusual sensations, and other mysterious events. Every home has its own unique story, and we look forward to sharing many of those experiences with you.
For privacy reasons, the homeowners featured in this investigation have chosen to remain anonymous.
Our Mini Investigation
This investigation began with what we call a mini-investigation. These sessions typically last about an hour and are designed to determine whether there is any evidence of unexplained activity within the home. Our primary focus during these visits is audio recording, allowing us to quickly assess whether any potential Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVPs) can be captured.
While every investigation is different and results can never be guaranteed, mini-investigations often provide enough information to determine whether a more extensive investigation may be worthwhile. If we capture compelling evidence, we discuss the findings with the homeowners and decide together whether to continue investigating.
Residential investigations are among our favorites because they allow us to return over time and observe whether activity changes, remains consistent, or develops in unexpected ways.
The 2023 Investigation
Our first visit to this home took place in 2023.
During the investigation we used two digital audio recorders, a K2 EMF meter, and a phone-based ITC (Instrumental Trans-Communication) word generator application.
The K2 meter measures fluctuations in electromagnetic fields (EMFs) using a five-LED display. Although EMF meters were originally designed for detecting electrical fields, they have become a popular investigative tool within the paranormal community to document unexplained EMF changes during investigations.
The ITC word generator app works by linking environmental sensor readings to a database of pre-programmed words and phrases. Some believe spirits may be able to influence these electronic devices to communicate.
From our experience, we’ve occasionally seen ITC word generator apps produce words that appear to correspond with EVPs or details within an investigation. However, we’ve also found that these apps frequently generate random or irrelevant responses. For that reason, we never rely on them as standalone evidence. Instead, we view them as a supplemental investigative tool and only give them greater consideration when the words align with other documented evidence or meaningful circumstances.
During this investigation, several words generated by the app stood out as particularly relevant. While investigating the sewing room, we noticed an urn containing a loved one’s ashes displayed on a shelf. At that moment, the app generated the word “Ashes.” Later, while standing in the hallway, the app displayed the words “Bar” and “Johnny.” We then noticed an ice bucket sitting on the hallway buffet that featured the name “JohnnieWalker.”
Coincidences like these are intriguing and difficult to ignore. While they cannot be considered proof of paranormal communication on their own, when they occur alongside other compelling evidence, they become noteworthy pieces of the overall investigation. Whether these words were simply chance or represented an attempt at communication is ultimately left to individual interpretation. If they were meaningful, perhaps the spirit associated with the ashes was making a lighthearted reference to enjoying a drink. While we’ll never know for certain, moments like these are part of what makes paranormal investigations so fascinating.
For this investigation, one recorder was placed on the living room coffee table while we carried the second recorder and other equipment throughout the house as we asked questions.
2023 Investigation Summary
Based on the evidence collected during our investigation, we documented what appeared to be responses from multiple distinct voices throughout the home.
Our observations suggested the possible presence of four separate entities—three female voices, including one that sounded like a young child, and one adult male voice. One female voice maintained a consistent sound throughout the investigation, while others varied in tone, sometimes appearing raspy, robotic, or muffled, which may simply reflect the challenges often encountered when recording EVPs.
Throughout the investigation, the voices generally appeared calm and non-threatening. Some responses seemed to suggest that the young girl and the male voice were asking for help, while two adult female voices appeared comfortable within the environment.
EVPs were captured throughout the property, including both inside the home and in the backyard. We also documented notable EMF fluctuations in the backyard and one of the bedrooms. Based on our observations, several of the responses appeared to indicate a preference for spending time near the backyard seating area, while another suggested a dislike for one of the bedrooms.
Another interesting aspect of this investigation was how the apparent responses seemed to acknowledge both Ellie, the family’s dog, and the unusually hot conditions inside the home.
Ellie was very interested in everything we were doing, so to keep her occupied during the investigation, we gave her a Kong toy filled with peanut butter. As many dog owners know, these toys can keep a dog happily entertained for quite some time. At one point, we began discussing whether we should refill the toy with more peanut butter. Shortly afterward, we captured what sounded like a female voice saying, “You guys go help… okay?” Right after, another female voice appeared to say, “That’s enough.” Given the timing, the response seemed to fit remarkably well with our conversation about whether Ellie needed more peanut butter.
The weather presented another unique challenge during this investigation. The home did not have air conditioning, and temperatures inside were extremely warm. Although investigators often try to eliminate background noise when recording audio, the heat made that impractical. We decided it was more important to keep the fans running for both our comfort and Ellie’s well-being, even though they introduced considerable noise into our recordings.
Interestingly, several responses also appeared to acknowledge the heat. Early in the investigation, one of us commented that without the fans running, “we’re going to die in here.” Immediately afterward, we captured what sounded like a female voice responding, “Yeah.” Later, while discussing how hot Ellie was and how much water she had been drinking, another female voice appeared to say, “It is.”
Taken individually, these responses could easily be dismissed as coincidence. However, when considered alongside the timing of our conversations and the other evidence collected throughout the investigation, they became some of the more intriguing moments of the evening. Experiences like these remind us why context is so important when evaluating potential EVPs and why we encourage listeners to review the recordings and draw their own conclusions.
On several occasions, the recorded voices appeared to answer questions directly or comment on events taking place around them. If these responses were indeed paranormal in nature, they would be consistent with what investigators commonly describe as an intelligent haunting, where a spirit appears aware of its surroundings and capable of interacting with the living.
Based on everything we documented during this investigation, we found no evidence suggesting malicious or threatening intent. Instead, the activity appeared peaceful in nature. As with any paranormal investigation, however, additional visits would be necessary to better understand the reported activity over time.
Detailed Evidence
In addition to providing homeowners with a written summary, we also create a detailed investigation report documenting every significant finding, including a complete log of EVPs captured during the investigation.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the 2023 investigation was not simply the number of EVPs we recorded, but their apparent complexity.
Rather than capturing only isolated words, several recordings appeared to contain complete sentences. In some instances, the voices captured as EVP’s even seemed to be speaking to one another instead of directly responding to our questions.
We’ve observed this type of interaction more frequently during residential investigations than at public haunted locations. Whether these recordings truly represent communication or have another explanation remains open to interpretation.
Some recordings even appeared to suggest one male voice wanted to go outside while a female voice questioned him about doing so barefoot. Moments like these leave us asking more questions than they answer and remind us how much remains unknown about the nature of these unexplained experiences.
Returning in 2026
Following the compelling results of our 2023 investigation, we were eager to return to the home in 2026 to see whether the reported activity had changed over time.
The homeowners had recently experienced another unusual event that renewed their interest in having us investigate. One evening, while they were in bed, both husband and wife reported hearing what they believed to be a female voice say either “Cover up” or “Get up.” Because both witnesses heard the same unexplained voice, we were intrigued to revisit the property and see if we could document any additional activity.
Although our second investigation did not produce as much evidence as the original visit, we were still able to capture two particularly interesting EVPs. In separate rooms of the home, we recorded what sounded like a young girl softly saying, “Hi.” The similarity of the voice in both recordings made them especially noteworthy.
While these were the only significant EVPs captured during our return investigation, they suggest that some level of unexplained activity may still be present within the home. Like all paranormal investigations, each visit provides only a snapshot in time, and activity can vary greatly from one investigation to the next. Even so, the consistency of capturing what appears to be the same young female voice three years later made this follow-up investigation both rewarding and intriguing.
